The University of Coimbra is conducting traditional academic celebrations for the Festa das Latas. These events include the Sarau Académico, held on a stage in Rua da Sofia—the first time this location has been used following a municipal decision to close the street to traffic—and the traditional Serenata at Largo da Sé Nova.

José Machado, president of the AAC General Directorate, described the events as a “significant milestone” for both incoming and graduating students. The 2026 Festa das Latas e Imposição das Insígnias officially commenced with musical performances at Praça da Canção, featuring electronic music by DJ Kura and guitarist Diogo Mendes.

During the recent festivities, student activists utilized the event to draw attention to the urgent housing crisis and the shortage of student accommodation and ‘repúblicas’ throughout Portugal.

Parallel to these celebrations, the University is seeing institutional growth at its Figueira da Foz campus. Through a partnership with the local municipality, which provided assets such as a converted bus terminal for laboratories, the campus has expanded its academic offerings. The curriculum now includes undergraduate and master's degrees focused on sustainability and the maritime economy. Student enrollment is growing toward a target of 150 students, with the campus being recognized for its potential to support maritime-related startups and local innovation.
