The study, published in the journal JMIR Aging, analyzed over 20 years of data from more than 20,000 U.S. adults, cross-referencing longitudinal health data with weather records from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The findings indicate that each additional day with temperatures exceeding 35°C (95°F) is associated with an incremental increase in weekly alcohol consumption. This increase reaches approximately 6.3% when extreme heat persists for 30 days or more, with the most pronounced patterns occurring in individuals exposed to temperatures above 40.5°C (105°F) for extended periods. Environmental stressors appear to interact with childhood history. Participants who reported parental substance abuse or encounters with law enforcement during childhood showed a higher tendency to drink during heatwaves. In contrast, those who reported positive relationships with their fathers were less likely to increase consumption.
