The University of Maryland held a series of events known as ‘Henson Week’ to celebrate the 90th birthday and creative legacy of alumnus Jim Henson.

Initial festivities included a ‘Sock Puppet Party’ at the Stamp Student Union, which sought to set a Guinness World Record by requiring 629 participants to wear sock puppets simultaneously. The celebration also featured tie-dye activities and Muppet character drawing sessions.

As the week continued, the community held ‘Henson Mania’ at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center. This event, organized by the Student Alumni Leadership Council and Student Entertainment Events, showcased student projects from the New Works Incubator alongside interactive activities. Organizers stated the goal was to provide students with a meaningful way to connect with Henson’s history and influence beyond his existing memorial statue on campus.
