Research from the University of Michigan, published in ‘The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition’, has identified a link between food insecurity and an increased risk of dementia in older adults. Using longitudinal data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, the study tracked 2,051 adults over several decades.

The findings indicate that the timing of food insecurity is a critical factor. While food insecurity in midlife alone did not show a significant association with dementia, individuals who experienced nutritional instability during both midlife (1999–2003) and later life (2015–2019) faced nearly four times the risk of probable dementia compared to those who remained food secure.

Investigator Noura Insolera noted that while the effects of hunger on childhood learning are well-documented, further long-term data is required to analyze complex relationships like dementia risk. The research suggests that a lack of regular access to sufficient, high-quality food may lead to nutritional and psychological consequences that impact long-term cognitive health.
