The University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) began the 2026-2027 academic year with significant expansions, including 3,500 new enrollments and the introduction of new degrees in Mathematics, Physics, and Marine Sciences. The university also moved toward sustainability through a 7.5 MW energy self-consumption project and authorized the creation of a dedicated Faculty of Pharmacy, supported by over 6.5 million euros in regional government funding. Later in September, academic activities at the Faculty of Tourism and the Balearic Islands School of Hotel Management were briefly interrupted by a fire at the Arxiduc Lluís Salvador building. The fire, which originated on the rooftop due to flammable construction materials used in kitchen renovations, affected one classroom. Authorities ruled out the university’s photovoltaic installations as a cause, and classes were subsequently rescheduled within the same building with no reported injuries. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-27: University of the Balearic Islands resumes classes after building fire Academic activities have resumed at the University of the Balearic Islands' Faculty of Tourism after a rooftop fire at the Arxiduc Lluís Salvador building caused minor damage. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/university-of-the-balearic-islands-resumes-classes-after-building-fire ### 2026-09-04: University of the Balearic Islands expands academic offerings and energy projects The University of the Balearic Islands begins the 2026-2027 academic year with 11,000 students, new degree programs, a 7.5 MW energy self-consumption project, and the creation of a new Faculty of Pharmacy. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/university-of-the-balearic-islands-expands-academic-offerings-and-energy-projects --- Cite as: University of the Balearic Islands developments.
