University of Virginia football coach Tony Elliott addressed team difficulties ahead of a game against Duke, citing a demanding conference schedule and mounting injuries. Elliott noted offensive and defensive struggles but highlighted improvements in player communication and ownership.

Following a 19-16 loss to Duke, the team's record fell to 4-4. The defeat led to scrutiny regarding the offensive philosophy and leadership of Elliott and offensive coordinator Des Kitchings. While the defense performed well by limiting Duke's top running back despite multiple injuries, the offensive unit faced criticism for a lack of successful concepts.
