Sources: 8. Developments: 2. Urban tree populations in Mexico have faced significant threats from biological pests and infrastructure development. In Tamaulipas, authorities issued an alert regarding a ‘Brazilian moth’ plague that weakens trees, increasing the risk of them falling during high winds. Meanwhile, in Sinaloa, residents reported the removal of decades-old trees to facilitate road expansion projects and other urban developments, leading to calls for better reforestation and environmental oversight. In response to these challenges, legislative and technical efforts have emerged to protect urban greenery. In San Luis Potosí, a proposed reform to the State’s Urban Tree Protection and Conservation Law seeks to treat trees as essential environmental infrastructure. The initiative would mandate strict criteria for removal and require that for every tree removed for construction, at least three new trees must be planted if transplantation is not viable. Additionally, in Saltillo, experts are promoting technical solutions to manage the conflict between tree roots and urban pavement. Suggestions include using modular paving or expanding tree pits to accommodate growth, rather than resorting to tree removal. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-27: Mexico: New initiatives aim to protect urban trees and manage root damage Legislators in San Luis Potosí propose stricter urban tree protections, while experts in Saltillo advocate for technical infrastructure solutions to prevent tree removal caused by root damage. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/mexico-new-initiatives-aim-to-protect-urban-trees-and-manage-root-damage ### 2026-09-21: Mexico faces tree loss from pests and urban development Urban tree populations in Mexico face threats from a Brazilian moth plague in Ciudad Madero and significant removals due to road construction and local management in Los Mochis and Plan Libertador. 6 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/mexico-faces-tree-loss-from-pests-and-urban-development --- Cite as: Urban tree loss and conservation in Mexico.
