Uruguay has introduced Lector DNI Uy, a mobile application designed to facilitate secure digital identification through Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. Developed through cooperation between Agesic and the National Directorate of Civil Identification, the tool allows compatible smartphones to read the chip of Uruguayan identity cards issued from August 2022 onwards.

The application serves as a reader for physical documents to authenticate users for digital state services, potentially facilitating access to more than 80% of digital public procedures. To use the service, citizens must possess an NFC-enabled smartphone, a valid digital certificate on their physical ID, and their document PIN.

While initial reports indicated availability on both iOS and Android, subsequent updates specified that the application is currently available for Android, with an iOS version expected in the future.
