Sources: 5. Developments: 2. The U.S. Air Force is phasing out the A-10 Thunderbolt II, a process marked by the conclusion of specialized training and operations at Nellis Air Force Base. On September 22, 2026, the 66th Weapons Squadron completed its final A-10C training flight, ending nearly 50 years of elite tactical training and operational testing at the installation. This milestone follows the prior closure of the pilot training pipeline at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. While the A-10 fleet is scheduled to remain in service through 2030, the dismantling of its training infrastructure will reduce the number of personnel trained in the platform’s highest-level tactics. By September 25, 2026, Nellis Air Force Base conducted the final flight of its active duty A-10 aircraft. The base has served as a central proving ground for refining the aircraft’s software, avionics, and precision weaponry since 1977. To maintain close air support capabilities, the Air Force is transitioning these responsibilities and tactical expertise to multirole and advanced fighter platforms, including the F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and F-35 Lightning II. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-25: Nellis Air Force Base conducts final A-10 Thunderbolt II flight Nellis Air Force Base has completed the final flight of its A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft, ending nearly 50 years of Warthog operations and tactical training at the Nevada installation. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/nellis-air-force-base-conducts-final-a-10-thunderbolt-ii-flight ### 2026-09-22: U.S. Air Force concludes A-10 training course at Nellis AFB The U.S. Air Force has concluded the A-10 Thunderbolt II’s dedicated training course at Nellis Air Force Base, marking a major step in the aircraft's phase-out and the transition of its roles to other fighter-j 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/us-air-force-concludes-a-10-training-course-at-nellis-afb --- Cite as: U.S. Air Force A-10 retirement at Nellis AFB.
