Military leaders in the United States and France have raised alarms regarding the vulnerability of domestic air defenses to low-cost, mass-produced drone technology.

In the United States, Lieutenant General Joseph Jarrard of U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM) stated that the military currently lacks the sensors to detect and the effectors to intercept drone swarms launched from within its own borders. This follows previous testimony from NORTHCOM commander General Gregory Guillot, who noted the command could only defeat approximately one-quarter of detected drones. Concerns have been raised regarding close-range attack models similar to Ukraine’s ‘Operation Spiderweb,’ noting that over 350 drone incursions were detected across 100 U.S. military installations in 2024.

Similarly, French Chief of the Defense Staff General Fabien Mandon warned that France is not yet prepared for the threat of inexpensive, mass-produced drones. He highlighted a significant economic imbalance in modern warfare, where expensive missiles are often required to neutralize low-cost drones. Mandon emphasized the urgent need to reduce the ‘cost per kill’ and noted that defensive weapon production is not yet meeting the quantities required to counter intense waves of attacks. Former U.S. air defense chief Glen VanHerck added that existing infrastructures possess blind spots for small, low-altitude drones that traditional radar struggles to track.
