Argentina and the United States are working to finalize a new nuclear energy cooperation agreement, referred to as ‘Agreement 123’, before the end of 2026. This pact is intended to replace a 1997 convention that expires in 2027. The agreement establishes a legal framework for the transfer of nuclear technology, equipment, and materials for civilian use.

As negotiations progress, the updated framework aims to encourage private American investment and integrate Argentine industry into the North American nuclear value chain, including the potential introduction of small modular reactors.

Concurrently, the United States is advancing its own domestic nuclear infrastructure through the Department of Energy’s Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus (NLIC) initiative. The DOE has narrowed its selection for this project to five candidates, with Tennessee being a leading contender to host a complex focused on nuclear fuel manufacturing, recycling, and waste management.
