The United States Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class destroyer fleet is experiencing a maintenance crisis attributed to prolonged operations in the Middle East. Continuous offensives against Iran have strained personnel and vessel resources, contributing to an aging fleet where the average vessel age has risen to approximately 20 years. This strain has resulted in general repairs taking 26% longer than planned and requiring 8% more labor.

To address these needs, the USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51), stationed at the Naval Base in Rota, has entered the Navantia shipyard in Cádiz, Spain, for scheduled repairs and modernization. This marks the first time a vessel from the anti-missile shield has utilized the Cádiz dry dock facility, whereas such maintenance was previously handled at the Rota base. The maintenance process includes upgrades to the ship’s hull, propellers, shafts, combat systems, propulsion, and electronics.

This regional maintenance approach aims to reduce reliance on distant American facilities, accelerate turnaround times, and increase the material readiness of warships deployed in the 6th Fleet area of operations. US military and civilian personnel from the Deployed Regional Maintenance Center are working alongside Navantia industrial partners. The USS Arleigh Burke is one of five US destroyers currently stationed at Rota, with a sixth vessel, the USS John Basilone, expected to join the maintenance program this month.

Navantia holds a maintenance contract for these destroyers, renewed in 2021 for $822 million, which remains valid until 2028. The U.S. Navy is expected to open a new tender for this contract at the end of 2026.
