The U.S. Army has concluded its xTech|Humanoid competition, an initiative aimed at assessing how commercial humanoid robotics can support future military operations and reduce soldier exposure to dangerous tasks. The program, part of a broader autonomy push by the Humanoid Community of Collaboration, sought to establish a technical baseline for integrating these systems into the Joint Force.

Following evaluations of 103 initial proposals, ten companies reached the final stage, with nine conducting demonstrations at Marine Corps Base Quantico. The Army ultimately selected five winners. Among the successful participants was the robot ‘Alex’, developed by the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC). Alex is capable of moving at speeds over 1.5 m/s and can operate for more than two hours while carrying over 15 kg. While not yet cleared for active service, the technology is entering a phase of experimentation, with the Army identifying potential military utilities such as ballistic protection and hybrid autonomy systems.
