Data from the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances reveals that the inflation-adjusted median net worth of Black non-Hispanic families in the United States fell by 25% between 2022 and 2025, dropping from $49,100 to $36,800. This trend reversed previous gains and widened the racial wealth gap to its largest level since 2016. While the median wealth for typical Black families decreased, the average Black family net worth rose by 5% to $242,400, indicating that wealth gains were concentrated among higher-income households. Analysts suggest that declines in the value of retirement accounts, vehicles, and homes likely contributed to the drop in median wealth. Black families were the only major racial or ethnic group to experience a decline in median net worth during this period. Other groups saw growth, with White non-Hispanic families’ median net worth rising 6% to $332,100, Hispanic or Latino families increasing 18% to $79,600, and Asian families rising 16% to $677,600. The decline highlights vulnerabilities as rising costs for healthcare, education, and housing may be outpacing savings and investments. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-26: Black wealth faces decline amid economic pressures Inflation-adjusted median Black family wealth reportedly fell 25% between 2022 and 2025, while industry leaders emphasize the importance of equity ownership for long-term economic security. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/black-wealth-faces-decline-amid-economic-pressures ### 2026-10-24: Federal Reserve report shows 25% decline in Black median net worth A Federal Reserve report reveals the median net worth of Black American families fell 25% between 2022 and 2025, widening the racial wealth gap as White family wealth rose. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/federal-reserve-report-shows-25-decline-in-black-median-net-worth --- Cite as: US Black median net worth decline.
