The United States has formally requested the extradition of Mevlid Jašarević from Bosnia and Herzegovina to face charges in a District of Columbia court. Jašarević, a Serbian citizen, recently completed a 15-year prison sentence in Bosnia and Herzegovina for a 2011 terrorist attack on the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo, an incident in which he fired approximately 105 rounds from an automatic weapon and injured a police officer.

The U.S. indictment includes charges of attempted murder of embassy officials and employees, as well as destruction of property. Following the request, the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina ordered an 18-day detention for Jašarević to prevent flight.

Legal defense counsel has characterized the request as politically motivated and argued it could violate the principle of ‘ne bis in idem’ (double jeopardy), as the U.S. charges are based on the same criminal acts for which Jašarević has already served a full sentence. Additionally, the defense noted that Bosnia and Herzegovina typically does not extradite individuals to countries where they face the death penalty, though U.S. officials have provided assurances that such a penalty will not be sought.
