A series of cybersecurity incidents has compromised sensitive information within major United States federal agencies.

In early November, a group calling itself the Department of Peace released data online via the non-profit Distributed Denial of Secrets. This leak reportedly exposed the personal information of approximately 41,000 Department of Homeland Security employees, including those within Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The leaked data included names, phone numbers, email addresses, and workplace locations, as well as information related to surveillance programs. While hackers claimed to have targeted the Okta single sign-on service, Okta stated its systems were not breached.

Concurrently, a breach involving an FBI job portal has escalated. Following an initial hack in September, the FBI confirmed that cybercriminals exfiltrated the personal data of thousands of agents, including Social Security numbers, home addresses, and dates of birth. Internal communications suggest the breach may extend to the broader Department of Justice, potentially impacting sensitive background check data for employees and applicants across various U.S. attorney offices.
