Following a military conflict that began in February, President Donald Trump declared Iran ‘completely defeated’ on August 13, 2026. Trump asserted that the United States has assumed ‘total control’ over the Strait of Hormuz, claiming a naval blockade has crippled the Iranian economy and ended the war.

By August 16, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf rejected these claims, declaring that Iran achieved a military and political victory. Ghalibaf stated that adversaries failed to meet any of their nine strategic objectives.

Disputes regarding the Strait of Hormuz have intensified. While the United States has suggested the area could be considered U.S. territory due to its de facto control, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi asserted that the strait ‘has been, is and will be Iranian,’ maintaining that control cannot be established through military presence alone.
