Donald Trump identified the participation of transgender women in female sports as ‘one of our best cards’ for the upcoming vote. In response to a surge in Republican advertising—which has exceeded $60 million in spending on transgender-related television ads—Democratic candidates have begun shifting their own strategies. While some Democrats are attempting to downplay the topic by citing existing state laws, others in competitive races have adopted more forceful rhetoric, expressing opposition to transgender athletes in girls’ sports or criticizing transgender ‘ideology.’ These tactical shifts have created internal friction within the Democratic Party, as advocates express concern over the potential marginalization of the transgender community. Polling indicates that while the economy remains a higher priority for voters than transgender issues, the Republican Party currently holds an advantage on this specific topic. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-27: Democrats shift strategies amid Republican transgender issue ads Democrats are shifting strategies to counter $60 million in Republican advertising focused on transgender issues, with some candidates adopting more conservative stances to appeal to voters. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/democrats-shift-strategies-amid-republican-transgender-issue-ads ### 2026-09-19: Donald Trump targets transgender rights in midterm election strategy Donald Trump and Republicans are utilizing transgender rights as a central campaign issue for the upcoming midterm elections amid economic pressures and internal Democratic shifts. 6 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/donald-trump-targets-transgender-rights-in-midterm-election-strategy --- Cite as: US midterm election transgender rights campaign focus.
