The U.S. defense sector continues to see significant activity regarding armored vehicle procurement and technological development. Following a U.S. Army announcement that it had reached sufficient levels of a specific armored vehicle model, Congress secured funding to continue procurement of “excess” vehicles. Concurrently, defense contractor AM General and its employees donated over $58,000 to committees associated with key members of the appropriations committee.

At the AUSA 2026 exhibition, contractors showcased advanced military mobility and combat technologies. AM General unveiled a redesigned HUMVEE featuring a new powertrain with a 250-horsepower common rail direct injection engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. This modernization program, which includes improved suspension and future plans for autonomous capabilities, is slated for its first production phase in late 2027. The company is also displaying a JLTV A2 equipped with counter-UAS capabilities and an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) integrated with XTEND technology.

BAE Systems, in partnership with Forterra and RENK America, introduced a new Autonomous Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV), with an initial demonstration of the autonomous platform planned for February 2027.

Regarding the U.S. Army’s program to replace the Bradley Fighting Vehicle via the XM30 Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle (MICV), General Dynamics Land Systems and American Rheinmetall have delivered prototypes. The testing program has shifted from Fort Irwin to Fort Hood, Texas, where seven prototypes from each competitor—including General Dynamics’ Wolf prototype and a version of the American Rheinmetall Lynx family—will undergo soldier evaluations through early 2027.
