U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio conducted a visit to Portugal to meet with Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel. Prior to the official meetings, approximately 300 people gathered in Lisbon to protest the visit. Organized by the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC), the demonstrators used the slogan “No to the presence of Marco Rubio in Portugal,” calling for an end to war and expressing opposition to the situation in Palestine and the blockade on Cuba.

Following the protests, the diplomatic meetings focused on strengthening bilateral ties through economic diplomacy. Discussions included cooperation regarding Middle East tensions and potential agreements for Portugal to purchase F-35 fighter jets from the United States.

Building on these discussions, Portugal and the United States are further strengthening economic and commercial ties through enhanced cooperation in strategic sectors, including energy, technology, defense, aerospace, and tourism. Secretary Rubio highlighted Portugal’s potential as a gateway for American technology companies into the European market, noting its geographic location, critical mineral reserves, and large-scale data centers.

To facilitate this growth, the two nations are launching the CEO Forum Portugal – United States. This business platform, held in Lisbon alongside the Web Summit, aims to foster dialogue between government and business leaders to identify new investment opportunities. This initiative follows commitments made during the 52nd Permanent Bilateral Commission held in Lisbon earlier this year.
