Texas has initiated the distribution of $1 billion in public funds to eligible families to assist with private education expenses. This move follows a broader trend across several Republican-controlled state legislatures that have approved similar programs over the last six years.

As a result of these initiatives, approximately half of all school-age children in the United States are now eligible to apply for state funding for private education. Because many private schools are religious, the shift has sparked debate regarding the separation of church and state.

In response to the funding, the Association of Classical Christian Schools (ACCS) has formed a coalition with conservative organizations, including the Heritage Foundation and Turning Point Education. The group aims to create or convert 5,000 new classical Christian schools over the next decade to serve 1.5 million students. While proponents view the programs as a way to educate leaders using public funds, critics argue the diversion of resources will drain essential funding from public schools.
