On the night of 1–2 August 2026, 36-year-old Federico Venco was run over in Somma Lombardo, Varese province, while assisting a woman who had become lost. Police say the driver, 44-year-old Mirko Bertellini, deliberately rammed Venco’s motorcycle out of jealousy, mistakenly identifying Venco as a rival of Bertellini's ex-partner. Venco died on impact; the woman survived with shock. Bertellini was arrested and faces charges of aggravated voluntary homicide.

Following the incident, the municipal council of Samarate voted unanimously to declare a day of civic mourning. On 8 August 2026, funeral services were held at the Church of the Purification of the Virgin Mary, attended by members of the Samarate and Somma Lombardo communities and local officials. 

During the ceremony, Samarate Mayor Alessandro Ferrazzi announced that officials will formally request that President Sergio Mattarella grant official recognition to Venco's memory in honor of his exceptional altruism.
