Two priests, Ramón Antonio Acosta and Carlos Eduardo Quintero, were detained in Anzoátegui, Venezuela, following allegations of sexual abuse involving minors. Because the clerics hold military status within the Bolivarian National Armed Forces, they were initially held under surveillance at a National Guard facility.

As the investigation progressed, a court in Barcelona ordered the preventive detention of the priests. The prosecution expanded the scope of the case to include a fourth victim, a 16-year-old choir member, in addition to the initial three victims.

In response to the allegations, the Ermita El Carmen sanctuary suspended public services. The Venezuelan Military Ordinariate expressed support for the victims, and the court has placed the case under strict legal reserve for 45 days to protect the minors involved.
