Venus Williams was awarded wildcards for both singles and doubles at the 2026 Guangzhou Open in late October. In the singles competition, Williams suffered a straight-sets defeat (6-2, 6-2) against 18-year-old Austrian Lilli Tagger in the first round. The match, which lasted 72 minutes, highlighted a 28-year age difference between the competitors, a gap noted as being among the largest in WTA history. Tagger, the fourth seed, dominated the match with 29 winners.

This loss extends Williams’ consecutive singles defeat streak on the WTA circuit to 16 matches and leaves her with a 0-13 record for the 2026 season. Currently ranked 599th in the world, the former world number one has not secured a singles victory since July 2025. Despite the result, Williams received a standing ovation from the Guangzhou crowd.

In the doubles category, Williams has seen more success. Partnering with Indonesian player Janice Tjen, the 46-year-old Williams qualified for the doubles semi-finals after defeating Lyudmyla Kichenok and Makoto Ninomiya with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. This achievement marks Williams’ first appearance in a doubles semi-final since winning a silver medal in mixed doubles at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
