In late September 2026, the Municipality of Funchal announced it would host World Animal and Veterinarian Day on October 3 at the Lido Gardens. The event was designed to celebrate the importance of animals and the role of veterinarians in public health through activities such as an animal blessing, a canine parade, and awareness sessions regarding animal-assisted interventions.

Following the event, the focus shifted to the broader significance of Veterinary Medicine Day on October 4. This date, coinciding with the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, serves to recognize the essential contributions of veterinary professionals to food security, wildlife conservation, and the prevention of zoonotic diseases, emphasizing the link between animal and human health.
