Health officials and researchers have identified the increasing presence of potent veterinary sedatives within illicit drug supplies, specifically within fentanyl-related markets.

Initial reports highlighted the extreme danger of carfentanil, a synthetic opioid used for sedating large animals. It is described as being approximately 100 times more potent than fentanyl and 10,000 times more potent than morphine, making even minute quantities lethal to humans.

Subsequent research from the University of Pennsylvania identified medetomidine as another veterinary sedative appearing in fentanyl supplies. Medetomidine is reported to be 100 to 200 times more potent than xylazine. The emergence of this substance has led to a quadrupling of severe withdrawal cases, requiring intensive care and specialized medical protocols to manage symptoms such as tachycardia and potential organ damage.
