The Viana do Castelo City Council has approved several municipal initiatives aimed at social support and infrastructure development.

In mid-October, the council approved an 8.49 million euro contract for the construction of 64 controlled-cost housing units in Darque. This project, part of the municipality’s Integrated Housing Program, targets middle-class and young families by offering prices below market value. The initiative also includes urban requalification to revitalize the surrounding area.

By late October, the municipal executive unanimously approved approximately 1 million euros in funding for the 2026/2027 academic year. This budget allocates roughly 679,000 euros to a School Transport Plan for students in isolated areas or those with mobility difficulties. Additionally, the municipality is providing economic aid for primary and pre-school education, including subsidies for didactic materials and meal costs to assist low-income households.
