The ‘Ground Up’ initiative, a $13 million program managed by the Violence Reduction Unit, utilizes a public health approach to support community organizations in addressing localized drivers of violence. In the political sphere, the Victorian Greens have proposed a $1 billion investment to create an Office of Community Safety & Crime Prevention, modeled after New York City, to provide 24/7 crisis outreach and support for mental health and homelessness services. In addition to violence reduction, the government has launched a $21.5 million Illegal Waste Dumping Taskforce targeting four council areas: Hume, Banyule, Melton, and Greater Geelong. This initiative employs advanced surveillance technology, including drones equipped with light detection, remote sensing, ground-penetrating radar, and methane-detecting ‘sniffer drones’.
