Vienna is implementing infrastructure projects to address projected population growth and environmental challenges.

As part of the ‘Wiener Wasser 2050’ strategy, the city is expanding its drinking water reserves by constructing a new treatment plant at the Donauinsel. This facility will process up to 1,000 liters of water per second using groundwater from 17 wells to prepare for heatwaves, climate change, and population increases.

Additionally, the Vienna Environmental Committee has approved planning for a new waste treatment plant in the Donaustadt district. Designed to meet upcoming European Union recycling mandates, the facility will include a sorting stage for plastics and metals before incineration, converting generated heat into electricity and thermal energy for local households. Construction is expected to begin no earlier than 2030.
