Vietnam is scheduled to officially discontinue 2G mobile services nationwide on September 15, 2026. This transition is intended to optimize radio frequency resources and support national digital transformation by promoting 4G and 5G technologies.

Mobile operators have begun decommissioning 2G base stations. To maintain connectivity, users must ensure their devices and SIM cards support Voice over LTE (VoLTE) or 4G/5G standards, as older or incompatible handsets may lose the ability to make calls or send SMS messages. 

While the shutdown is widespread, the Radio Frequency Authority under the Ministry of Science and Technology noted that 2G networks will be maintained in specific strategic areas, such as the Spratly Islands, Paracel Islands, and DK oil rigs, to ensure continuous communication for national defense.
