In the first half of 2026, Vietnam’s automotive market grew by 29% compared to the previous year, with 328,818 vehicles sold. Japanese manufacturers dominated this period, with Toyota, Mazda, and Mitsubishi accounting for seven of the top ten best-selling models. While conventional models remain strong, the market is undergoing a rapid transition toward electrification. Between 2022 and 2025, battery-electric vehicle (BEV) registrations surged 628%, with BEVs capturing nearly 30% of all new-car registrations.

Hybrid vehicles have emerged as a significant segment, aided by tax policies. Under Decree 360/2025, self-charging hybrids meeting specific energy requirements—where gasoline accounts for no more than 70% of total energy—receive a 30% reduction in special consumption tax. This has led manufacturers like Toyota and Kia to implement price reductions on hybrid models. In July 2026, hybrid sales rose 38% year-on-year to 1,636 units, with hybrid versions of the Corolla Cross and Innova Cross significantly outselling gasoline-only versions.

Despite the growth in electrification, the broader market experienced a downturn in August 2026, with estimated sales dropping to approximately 48,000 units—a decrease of nearly 10,000 vehicles from the previous month—attributed to the traditional ‘Ghost Month’. 

Technical and regulatory shifts are also underway. The Vietnam Register reported that 504,198 vehicles failed their initial inspections during the first eight months of 2026, primarily due to braking and lighting issues. To modernize, new regulations will introduce electronic vehicle inspection certificates featuring QR codes starting March 1, 2026, intended to reduce costs and prevent document loss.
