In late July 2026, Vietnam’s government formally approved a National Child Protection and Child‑Labour Prevention Programme for 2026‑2030. Signed by Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra, the plan aims to reduce child violence and sexual abuse by at least 5% annually and lower the child-labour rate for ages 5-17 to below 1.1% by 2030. Implementation targets include providing child-protection education to 100% of families and students, training 100% of officials in health, education, and social-assistance sectors, and providing guidance to 90% of enterprises. The programme also mandates integrated protection services in all provinces, inter-sectoral mechanisms in 95% of communes, and the establishment of child-friendly interview rooms at the commune level.

Following the rollout, Vietnam has moved to strengthen international cooperation and address modern risks. During a meeting in Hanoi, Vice Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra met with UNICEF Regional Director Sanjay Wijesekera to discuss five decades of partnership. Discussions highlighted Vietnam’s progress in child welfare, such as achieving universal secondary education and record-low malnutrition rates, while focusing on expanding support for ethnic minorities and children in mountainous regions.

As part of its digital transformation, the government is also prioritizing safety in the online environment. The Prime Minister has approved a specific program for the protection and support of child development in the digital space for the 2026–2030 period, complementing the broader national efforts to reduce illegal child labour and enhance institutional frameworks for vulnerable groups.
