Sources: 7. Developments: 2. Vietnam has initiated several large-scale environmental programs focused on reforestation and emission reduction. Initial efforts include local and national initiatives to increase forest cover and prevent landslides. In Ho Chi Minh City, plans were established to replace 441 hectares of forest used for infrastructure through new protection forests, natural regeneration, and supplementary planting. Nationally, the Gaia Nature Conservation Center’s ‘Joining Hands to Plant Forests’ 2026 campaign aims to plant nearly 70,000 native large-wood trees across various national parks and nature reserves. Following these conservation efforts, the RECAF Project secured approximately $102 million to reduce emissions in the Central Highlands and South Central Coast. This project, supported by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), targets a reduction of 6.68 million tons of CO2 equivalent. The initiative focuses on provinces such as Dak Lak, Lam Dong, Khanh Hoa, and Gia Lai, utilizing integrated agro-forestry models to support climate resilience for hundreds of thousands of people while aiming to increase forest cover in Gia Lai to 46.5% by 2030. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-28: RECAF Project receives $102 million for emission reduction in Vietnam The $102 million RECAF Project will implement emission reduction and forest protection initiatives across four Vietnamese provinces, targeting climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods for over 1 million- 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/recaf-project-receives-102-million-for-emission-reduction-in-vietnam ### 2026-09-15: Vietnam launches large-scale reforestation and forest protection initiatives Vietnam is launching major reforestation initiatives, including Ho Chi Minh City's 441-hectare replacement plan and a national campaign to plant 70,000 trees to mitigate climate change and erosion. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/vietnam-launches-large-scale-reforestation-and-forest-protection-initiatives --- Cite as: Vietnam environmental conservation and reforestation.
