Vietnam is expanding its heritage tourism sector through specialized railway services and community-based initiatives. In Hanoi, the ‘Hanoi Five Gates’ tourist train marked its first anniversary, having served nearly 100,000 passengers since its commercial launch in September 2025. To commemorate the 81st anniversary of the August Revolution and Vietnam's National Day on September 2, the service introduced a special theme titled ‘Independence Train - Carrying Vietnam's Pride’. The train’s interior and exterior feature red carpets and the national flag, with carriages inspired by the ancient Thang Long citadel and named after historic gates: O Cau Den, O Quan Chuong, O Cau Giay, O Cho Dua, and O Dong Mac. The operator aims to provide a mobile cultural space where passengers experience history through architectural elements and messages such as ‘Independence - Freedom - Happiness’.

Building on this momentum, the Vietnam National Railway Group (VNR) has officially launched the ‘Hue Ancient Capital – Phong Nha: World Heritage Journey’ in Central Vietnam. Operating on a 190-kilometer route, the service connects major UNESCO World Heritage sites and historical landmarks, including the Hue Ancient Capital, Quang Tri Citadel, Vinh Moc Tunnels, and Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. This eight-carriage train features 180-degree rotating seats, a 24-seat VIP carriage, a community carriage for folk music, and an entertainment carriage offering cinema, massage chairs, and traditional dress rentals.

Beyond rail, tourism is diversifying through community-based initiatives. In the Tam Giang Lagoon area, Ngu My Thanh fishing village has transitioned from traditional fishing to tourism, offering experiences such as rowing through mangrove forests. To promote the new rail service, VNR is offering ticket discounts of up to 50% through early September 2026, with ongoing promotional pricing scheduled through the end of the year.
