During the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Vietnamese officials emphasized dedication to nuclear non-proliferation and long-term strategic planning through 2035 and 2050. To implement these goals, the country is advancing specific projects, including the development of nuclear power plants in Ninh Thuan and the establishment of a nuclear science and technology center. Under the adjusted Power Development Plan VIII, the Ninh Thuan 1 and Ninh Thuan 2 projects are targeted for the 2030-2035 period, with experts noting the potential reliability of Russian nuclear technology. Parallel to infrastructure development, Vietnam is working to strengthen its regulatory and technical frameworks. The Ministry of Science and Technology is leading efforts to refine laws, such as the 2025 Law on Atomic Energy, to oversee the entire lifecycle of nuclear plants. This includes enhancing the capabilities of the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute and the Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety to ensure rigorous inspection and independent monitoring. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-22: Vietnam advances nuclear energy plans and regulatory frameworks Vietnam is planning nuclear power expansion, including the Ninh Thuan projects, while strengthening regulatory frameworks and evaluating Russian technology to ensure energy security and low-carbon growth. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/vietnam-advances-nuclear-energy-plans-and-regulatory-frameworks ### 2026-09-19: Vietnam reaffirms commitment to peaceful nuclear energy development Vietnam reaffirmed its commitment to the safe and peaceful development of nuclear energy at the IAEA, highlighting long-term plans for nuclear power plants in Ninh Thuận to ensure national energy security. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/vietnam-affirms-commitment-to-peaceful-nuclear-energy-development --- Cite as: Vietnam nuclear energy development.
