On September 18, 2026, Vietnamese authorities detained three individuals—Nguyen Duc Thuan, Ho Pham Hiep Huy, and Thai Cong Truong Son—near the My Quy Tay border gate in Tay Ninh province. The Ministry of Public Security initiated criminal cases against the men for terrorism and the forgery of seals and documents, alleging they used fraudulent Australian and Norwegian identification to enter Vietnam illegally from Cambodia for subversive activities. The situation escalated into an international dispute following conflicting reports regarding the arrests. While the Vietnamese government maintains the suspects were apprehended during an illegal entry attempt, the opposition organization Viet Tan claims two of its members were “abducted in Cambodia and forcibly transferred into Vietnamese territory.” Viet Tan disputes the terrorism classification and asserts the individuals lost contact in Cambodia prior to being taken, raising questions about whether the incident involved an extrajudicial operation across international borders. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-30: Vietnam arrests three individuals on terrorism and forgery charges Vietnam has charged three men, including Norwegian and Australian citizens, with terrorism and forgery, amid conflicting claims of illegal entry versus abduction from Cambodia by Viet Tan members. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/vietnam-arrests-three-individuals-on-terrorism-and-forgery-charges ### 2026-09-28: Vietnam detains three Viet Tan members for terrorism and forgery Vietnam has detained three Viet Tan members for terrorism and document forgery after they illegally entered the country from Cambodia using forged passports and IDs. 6 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/viet-tan-members-detained-for-illegal-entry-and-terrorism --- Cite as: Vietnamese detention of Viet Tan members.
