In early September 2026, significant Viking-era silver hoards were discovered in Denmark and Finland.

In Rebild, Denmark, a homeowner uncovered approximately 18.5 kilograms of silver, including bars, jewelry, coins, and a Thor’s hammer pendant. Torben Sarauw of North Jutland Museums noted the find provides “rare insight into the Viking silver economy” and is nearly three times larger than the previous record-holder.

Shortly after, in southern Finland near Sysmä, an amateur metal detectorist discovered a hoard weighing approximately 4.5 kilograms. The find, consisting of thousands of silver coins and various ornaments stored in birch bark containers, is believed to be Finland’s largest Viking-era silver discovery.
