In mid-August, the Guerrero State Attorney General's Office arrested two municipal police officers from Acapulco, Manuel Alejandro ‘N’ and Ricardo ‘N’, in connection with the homicide of a man identified as Carlos ‘N’. The victim’s body was found abandoned in the Unidad Ciudadana neighborhood on August 10, and authorities seized a patrol vehicle believed to be linked to the crime. In early September, Gilberto Dorantes Basurto, the former mayor of Coahuayutla and current deputy director of Public Security for La Unión, was killed in an ambush on the Zihuatanejo-Lázaro Cárdenas federal highway. An armed group intercepted an official police patrol vehicle, killing Dorantes Basurto and one officer, Silvano Peñaloza Peñaloza. A third officer was seriously injured in the attack.
