A wave of violence in Cuautla, Morelos, initially manifested through targeted arson attacks on public transportation. The burning of several transport vans led to the suspension of multiple routes and forced a de facto curfew as residents and businesses avoided movement after dark. While some schools remained operational, the insecurity significantly disrupted mobility for workers and students.

The situation escalated into broader regional instability characterized by riots, murders, and shootings linked to extortion. Criminal activity expanded to include the burning of sugarcane fields, which isolated towns and prevented thousands of workers from commuting. The conflict is attributed to intense fighting between at least six different cartels. In Cuautla, the violence also resulted in the destruction of a Bodega Aurrerá office.

In response to the crisis, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a one-month period to consult and assess the situation in Morelos before implementing specific measures to address the criminality.
