The New York Police Department is investigating two separate violent incidents involving members of the Ghanaian community in the Bronx. On October 29, 15-year-old Javits Frimpong was fatally shot while walking to Dreamyard Preparatory School near East 171st Street and Crotona Place in the Claremont neighborhood. The victim, who had moved from Ghana to the United States approximately one year ago, was struck once in the abdomen and later died at St. Barnabas Hospital. Surveillance footage reportedly shows an attacker chasing the victim before the shooting. Authorities are searching for three teenage suspects, believed to be between 16 and 18 years old, who were seen wearing black clothing and blue surgical masks.

Frimpong’s father, Thomas Frimpong, has alleged that the shooting may be linked to school bullying. He stated that the school principal had informed him days prior that two students had been suspended following an altercation involving his son, noting that school officials had previously suggested Javits was acting in self-defense during a recent confrontation. Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, has called for an impartial investigation into whether racial bullying played a role.

Following the shooting, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that President Donald Trump has agreed to grant an immediate visa to Frimpong’s mother, Doris Adu Gyamfi, allowing her to travel to New York. In a separate incident, four masked suspects on motorcycles ambushed a 73-year-old man and his 61-year-old wife at a bus stop on Gun Hill Road. The victims reported that the attackers used firearms to strike the woman and beat the man.
