While initial reports downplayed links to organized crime, investigators began probing potential connections between the boy’s family and the Sydney underworld, noting that the boy’s father’s residence had been the target of a drive-by shooting the previous year.

On September 24, authorities confirmed that the 11-year-old boy died in a hospital three days after being shot in the face and neck at a Norwest apartment. Superintendent Naomi Moore stated that investigators are considering potential links to organized crime, noting that several individuals present at the unit are known to NSW Police. 

While the boy's family has described the shooting as a “tragic accident,” police are continuing to investigate the nature of the gathering and are searching for the weapon used. Regarding the initial Norwest response, one 18-year-old man has been charged with concealing a serious indictable offense, while two others were released pending further inquiries. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns previously described the event as an “incredibly distressing situation” and a “tragic reminder” of firearm dangers.
