Social media platforms have seen a trend of viral animal videos featuring heartwarming and humorous moments involving various pets and zoo animals. Initial trending content included clips of dogs in Japan and Canada, such as a Mame Shiba playing with a rubber band, a Chihuahua stealing noodles, and Shiba Inu siblings interacting with strangers at the Columbia Icefield. Other notable clips featured a Miniature Dachshund in Hokkaido encountering wild deer. Subsequent trending videos expanded to include rescue pet stories, such as a calico kitten named Ten-chan adjusting to a new home, and Bernese Mountain Dogs greeting a delivery driver. Content also featured interactions between cats and red panda Kenshin-kun from Omoriyama Zoo, focusing on themes of animal reunions and the bonds between pets and owners. Recent viral content has highlighted specific humorous behaviors in pets. A Bichon Frise named Kuku gained traction for a video where a facial expression resembled “whipped cream” being squeezed while playing with a clear file. In Japan, a cat named Koharu became a topic of discussion on Threads for attempting to deliver “presents” to her owner, only to drop them mid-way to meow for attention. Other notable moments include a Shih Tzu named Poco, whose human-like expression of shock after being startled by a sneeze garnered significant engagement, and a cat named Yui, who went viral on TikTok for her patience while waiting for a hair dryer to stop despite appearing irritated. Newer trends have focused on highly expressive animals, such as Mookie, a dog on Instagram whose dramatic side-eyes and bewildered looks are used in memes to represent human struggles.
