The phase 2 EVITA clinical trial has investigated the effects of daily 1,000 mg oral vitamin C supplementation on 109 patients with precancerous blood disorders, specifically clonal cytopenia of undetermined significance (CCUS) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).

Results from the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study indicate that while the supplementation did not significantly change the growth rate of abnormal blood cell clones, it may offer survival benefits. Exploratory analysis showed that participants receiving vitamin C had significantly higher survival rates after approximately three years of follow-up compared to the placebo group.

Researchers also noted changes in cytokine levels associated with inflammation and immune signaling, as well as fewer adverse events in the treatment group. Because these findings are exploratory, researchers have emphasized the necessity for larger-scale phase 3 clinical trials to confirm these outcomes before making definitive medical recommendations.
