Research has identified a connection between vocal and speech patterns and the risk of dementia or cognitive impairment.

An initial study from Drexel University’s College of Medicine, involving over 833,000 patients, found that individuals with diagnosed voice disorders—but no hearing loss—faced a 58% higher risk of cognitive impairment. For those with both voice disorders and hearing loss, the risk of developing dementia more than doubled. These vocal abnormalities, such as changes in volume, pitch, or clarity, may indicate early neurological changes in brain regions like the frontal and temporal lobes.

Subsequent research published in Science Advances expanded on these findings by examining nearly 3,000 Spanish speakers across Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. This study utilized a “speech clock” algorithm to analyze acoustic and linguistic features, including speed, pauses, and vocabulary. A discrepancy between a person’s actual age and their “speech age” was linked to accelerated biological aging and poorer cognitive performance.
