Volunteer fire departments across Germany and Luxembourg have been hosting community open house events to engage the public and demonstrate emergency service capabilities.

In Heiligenhaus, Germany, the fire department organized a biennial event under the theme ‘Rescue, Extinguish, Salvage, Protect’, featuring technology demonstrations and family activities. Similarly, the Groß-Rohrheim Volunteer Fire Department held an annual gathering that included displays of rescue equipment like hydraulic shears and collaborative bicycle coding services with local police.

Broader regional efforts included an action day in Frickenhausen, Germany, which showcased thermal imaging cameras, mobile flood barriers, and simulated traffic accident rescues. In Canach, Luxembourg, the Centre d’Incendie et de Secours held a ‘Meet & Greet’ day, providing hands-on training such as CPR refreshers and water pressure demonstrations to encourage recruitment.

Continuing these outreach efforts, the Velbert Fire Department held a community open house on October 3 as part of the nationwide ‘Türen auf mit der Maus’ action day. Under the theme ‘Kleine Wunder’, the event in Velbert-Mitte attracted more than 180 children. Participants engaged in experiments designed to demonstrate firefighting phenomena through play, inspected equipment, and viewed fire vehicles, while parents interacted with emergency personnel to learn about the department’s responsibilities.
