Researchers from the University of Malta and the Medieval Academy of America have proposed that the Voynich Manuscript, a 15th-century codex, may have been misbound. A study published in the journal ‘Digital Medievalist’ suggests that the manuscript’s pages might not follow a single cohesive order, but rather consist of separate booklets or ‘singulions’ that were bound incorrectly.

Using Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA), the research team found that statistical consistency between consecutive pages is significantly lower than in standard medieval texts. Visual evidence, such as illustrations of streams or pipes that fail to connect across current page spreads, supports the theory that the pages align more accurately when reordered based on statistical content similarity.

Lisa Fagin Davis, executive director of the Medieval Academy of America, noted that previous research based on the current sequence of pages will likely require revision. While this discovery may explain why scholars have struggled to identify linguistic patterns, the actual decipherment of the manuscript remains an unsolved mystery.

## Timeline

### 2026-10-22: Voynich Manuscript may have been incorrectly bound

Researchers suggest the mysterious Voynich Manuscript may be indecipherable because its pages were incorrectly bound, potentially requiring a total reassessment of its contents.
