Walmart has introduced a new membership strategy focused on securing customer loyalty through annual fees. Initial reports noted analyst skepticism regarding the value proposition, with critics warning that complex benefits might create a burden of “bundle management” for households.

To address these offerings, the company launched a combined membership bundle that integrates Walmart+ and Sam’s Club Plus for $120 per year. This pricing represents a discount of nearly $100 compared to the approximately $218 to $219 annual cost of purchasing the two memberships separately. 

Benefits of the bundle include member-only pricing at Sam’s Club, free delivery from both retailers, and a choice between Peacock or Paramount+ streaming services. Members also receive 10 cents per gallon in gas savings at over 17,000 participating stations, 2% Sam’s Cash on eligible purchases, and savings related to pharmacy, optical, and hearing services. 

Existing members can transition via the company’s apps or websites. Walmart+ annual members can upgrade for an additional $22 per year, while Sam’s Club members can upgrade for $60 more per year. Sam’s Club Plus members may activate Walmart+ at no extra cost. Walmart indicated that these changes are not expected to materially impact its fiscal third quarter or full-year guidance.

Industry analysts view the $120 bundle as a direct challenge to Amazon’s market dominance, noting the price is $19 lower than the $139 annual cost of Amazon Prime. While the Walmart bundle offers strong value on paper, experts suggest Amazon’s deeply entrenched ecosystem of shipping and streaming remains a formidable competitor.
