The December 2025 tidal-disruption flare (TDE 2025abcr) in galaxy WISEA J014656.04-152214.7 provided the first confirmed wandering supermassive black hole, roughly one-million solar masses and located about 30,000 light-years from its galactic nucleus. A second, contemporaneous Swift observation captured a similar TDE in a galaxy 750 million light-years away, demonstrating a new method for finding otherwise invisible rogue black holes.

In late July 2026, UNC astronomers reiterated the original detection, suggesting the black hole may have been displaced by an earlier galaxy merger. NASA’s upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, scheduled for launch on August 30, 2026, is expected to extend these searches to objects existing up to 11 billion years ago. Detailed Swift data confirmed the second event reached temperatures of approximately 54,000 °F.

A July 30 report in The Astrophysical Journal Letters identified the 750-million-light-year-distant object as the farthest known wandering supermassive black hole. Researchers from the University of Maryland and UNC noted that the discovery, verified with the SOAR telescope, proves such objects can be identified using optical telescopes and AI classifiers. 

In early August, further analysis confirmed the wandering black hole had been flagged by the Zwicky Transient Facility in November 2025. Additionally, a separate study of the blazar PKS 2155-304 challenged existing radiation theories, while research into Swift J1727.8-1613 suggested post-disruption black holes can expel significant accreted material, refining tidal-disruption physics models. New research in August confirmed that the black hole in Swift J1727.8-1613 expelled roughly 10% of its consumed mass, creating a sustained gas storm and suggesting black holes can “regurgitate” material. Furthermore, researchers utilized a machine learning program called ‘tdescore’ to analyze datasets for these events, reinforcing the efficacy of AI in identifying elusive, quiescent objects.
