Rookie linebacker Sonny Styles has emerged as a central figure for the Washington Commanders defense. Following a breakout performance in a 33-31 upset victory over the Seattle Seahawks, where he recorded two turnovers, Styles was tasked by head coach Dan Quinn to act as the primary on-field play-caller in the absence of Frankie Luvu. Wearing the ‘green dot’ helmet, Styles receives instructions from coordinator Daronte Jones to ensure proper unit alignment. Despite the success, Styles noted, “I’m not anywhere near where I want to be.”

As the season progressed, Styles continued his strong play, earning NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Through five games, he recorded 33 tackles, a sack, an interception, and a forced fumble, leading to an increase in his PFF grading. Analysts, including former NFL defensive back Domonique Foxworth, have praised his development, with Foxworth comparing Styles to San Francisco 49ers star Fred Warner due to his ability to diagnose plays and resist play action.

While individual performances have been strong, defensive coordinator Daronte Jones has focused on addressing second-half lapses. Following a 23-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, which left the team with a 1-4-1 record, the Commanders entered their bye week. In an effort to bolster the staff, General Manager Adam Peters announced the hiring of Steve Wilks. Peters noted that the move had been discussed by Quinn and Jones since training camp and that he was already familiar with Wilks from their previous time together with the 49ers.
