The Washington Commanders have faced significant roster challenges regarding player availability and depth. In mid-October, the team saw improvements in availability as linebacker Jordan Magee approached a return from injured reserve, alongside anticipated returns for wide receiver Stefon Diggs, safety Nick Cross, and cornerback Trey Amos.

By late October, following a bye week, the team held a 1-4-1 record and dealt with a major setback as wide receiver Terry McLaurin suffered a season-ending patellar tendon injury. While Stefon Diggs and Treylon Burks were expected to return to practice to form a receiving trio with rookie Antonio Williams, the team's offensive depth remained under scrutiny, specifically regarding the running back rotation and the performance of several 2024 draft picks.
